I’m so excited that for once I didn’t have to wait
forever to read a sequel! Of course, the feeling is only temporary as I now
have to wait another year before Mortal Heart comes out. I’ll just stick with
the happy feelings for now.
Dark Triumph is the second book in the His Fair Assassin
series and is more of a companion novel that a true sequel (to me at least). It
focuses on Sybella versus Ismae and continues the story of the fate of Brittany with only a
little bit of backtracking. In Dark Triumph we get a much better glimpse into
Sybella’s past and exactly why she is the way she is. Her story is pretty dark
and a little disturbing but nothing that you probably haven’t already thought
of or figured out if you’ve already read Grave Mercy.
But, wait! There’s more! *Minor Spoiler Alert* The best part of this book is that we get to know
more about the triumphant Beast of Waroch! Yes! I think he might be one of the
most likeable characters in the history of characters. I just cannot help but
like him! Sybella and Beast make a great team and they match one another’s reckless
and rebellious behavior. They’re pretty much unstoppable.
I know I’ve been on a bit of a fantasy bender lately but
because of that I can really appreciate LaFevers writing. At first her use of
methinks, mayhaps, etc really grated on me, but I realize that LaFevers was
doing her best to make her novel accurate and believable. She has effectively
created a world where everything is convincing, even the struggles between the
old gods and the new. This is a world where everything has a place and there
are no loose ends lying about. If you haven’t picked up these books yet, I highly
suggest you do so.
